I sat with you on a tree stump
     A
By a dead end road
        G
In the middle of the night
    D A
The stars above the treetops
         A
Blinking softly
          A G
Like they always have and will
A Bm G
To dream the night away would be a waste
     A Bm G
With anyone but you
A Bm G
To stare up on the sky all free of haste
D A\C# D
Makes the darkness go away and fade

A\C#... Bm... A... A...
We opened both our minds up
Like a hammer blow
And it all came pouring out
And I got hooked on night walks
Lose the small talk
I was never any good at that
To sleep a night like this would be a sin
With anyone but you
To figure out the world, without, within
Makes the darkness go away and fade
Later on as the birds woke
We got up again
Worked our way back through the woods
And softly as the sun spoke
Brushed the stars off
Brushed the dirt off from our clothes
The night is quiet and cold since you've been gone
To see the morning through until the dawn
Makes the darkness go away and fade
